Instructions
- 1. In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, ground pork, breadcrumbs, Parmesan, egg, milk, minced garlic, parsley, salt, black pepper, oregano, and red pepper flakes. Mix gently until just combined.
- 2. Shape the mixture into 18 to 20 meatballs, each about 1 1/2 inches wide.
- 3. Heat the Traditional Italian Infused Olive Oil Blend and olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the meatballs in batches and brown on all sides, about 5 to 6 minutes total per batch. Transfer the browned meatballs to a plate.
- 4. Add the chopped onion to the skillet and cook until softened, about 4 minutes. Stir in the minced garlic and cook for 30 seconds.
- 5. Pour in the crushed tomatoes and tomato sauce, then stir in the sugar, salt, and black pepper. Bring the sauce to a gentle simmer.
- 6. Return the meatballs to the skillet, spoon sauce over the top, and cover. Simmer on low heat for 20 to 25 minutes, until the meatballs are cooked through and the sauce has thickened.
- 7. Stir in the fresh basil just before serving. Spoon the meatballs and sauce over pasta, polenta, or warm crusty bread.
Notes
Do not overmix the meatball mixture or the texture can turn dense. Browning adds flavor, but if you are short on time you can simmer the shaped meatballs directly in the sauce a little longer until cooked through. For a smoother sauce, crush the tomatoes further with a spoon while simmering.
